PROJECT: New MCC and Plant Expansion

Electrical Engineering Functional Safety

Functional Safety

CLIENT: Glencore – Collinsville Mine

Functional Safety Electrical Engineering was critical to the successful delivery of this MCC and plant expansion project for Glencore Collinsville Mine, supporting safe infrastructure upgrades and compliance with AS61508, AS61511, and AS/NZS 4024 standards. Cell Engineering provides Functional Safety Electrical Engineering services for mining and industrial infrastructure projects across Australia, helping clients improve operational safety, compliance, and system reliability.

Our Functional Safety Electrical Engineering capabilities include risk assessments, safety lifecycle documentation, compliance auditing, and detailed engineering design aligned with Australian and international standards.

The process included:

  • Develop a functional safety management Plan (FSMP)
  • Chair a functional safety risk assessment
  • Document requirements in a functional safety requirements specification.
  • Complete detailed designs for the agreed category 2 systems needed and identified from the RA.
  • Model the intended failure rates in the Sistema software.
  • Report on findings and recommendations.

Functional Safety Engineering Scope

Cell Engineering was engaged to complete a comprehensive functional safety assessment for planned mining infrastructure expansions associated with the new MCC and plant upgrade works. The project involved developing a Functional Safety Management Plan (FSMP), chairing functional safety risk assessments, documenting system requirements, and preparing detailed engineering designs for category 2 safety systems identified during the assessment process. Our engineering team also modelled intended system failure rates using Sistema software to verify compliance requirements and support reliable operational outcomes.

Functional Safety Electrical Engineering Compliance

The project required close alignment with recognised functional safety and electrical engineering standards, including AS61508, AS61511, and AS/NZS 4024.

By applying structured risk assessment methodologies and practical electrical engineering design principles, Cell Engineering helped ensure the upgraded infrastructure met required safety, operational, and compliance expectations for mining operations.
